Definitions of Waterproofing and Water Permeability of Fabrics

In daily life, people often contact with water, which put forward waterproof requirements for all kinds of textile. The waterproof and permeable properties are two sides in one property of the fabric, which refers to the resistance to water wetting and permeation by the water of the fabrics.

The Testing Categories of Fabric Waterproofing

The main indexes of the fabric waterproof are dip water grade, hydrostatic pressure resistance grade, and water permeation capacity, and there are two kinds of test methods: spray method and hydrostatic pressure method. In order to measure the water permeability or waterproofing of fabrics, different methods are used depending on the actual use of the fabric, and the corresponding indexes are used to express the water permeability of fabrics.

    Test Purpose and Test Scope

Impact penetration tester tests the waterproof properties of fabrics by the spray method, which is applicable to any fabric with or without waterproof or water repellent treatment. The AATCC 42 standard can be used to measure the impact water permeability of fabrics, to predict the permeability against rainwater of fabrics, especially to measure the impermeability of clothing fabrics.

    Test Principle

At the back of the sample, place a weighted absorbent paper, spray a certain capacity of water on the tight surface of the sample, and then re-weight the weight absorbent paper to determine the water permeability of the sample, therefore evaluate the water permeability of the sample. The results of this test method depend on the fiber structure, yarn structure, and water repellent properties.

    Sample Preparation

Trimmed at least three samples, each sample size is 178mm*330mm, cut the length direction along the meridional direction. Place the samples and absorbent paper in the standard atmosphere with the relative humidity of 65%±2% and temperature of (21±1)℃ at least 4H before the test.

    Test Procedure

1 Clip one end of the specimen to the spring clip at the top of the slope, and use the other spring clamp at the free end of the sample. Weighing the weight of standard absorbent paper, accurate to 0.1g, and insert it under the specimen.

2 Inject the distilled water, deionized water or reverse osmosis water into the funnel of the tester, and spray the water on the sample. When injecting water into the funnel, do not create a whirlpool in the funnel. (fix a small blade in the funnel to prevent eddy current)

3 After the spray, pick up the sample carefully, remove the water absorbent paper below, and weigh quickly, accurate to 0.1g.
